The collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria created a power vacuum, leading to large-scale clashes between Kurdish rebels and pro-Türkiye armed groups.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which have retaken Manbij in northern Syria from ISIS in a joint operation with U.S. forces and ruled for eight years, were attacked by the pro-Turkish rebels, the Syrian National Forces (SNF), shortly after the collapse of the Assad regime.

Turkiye supported the pro-Turkish rebel Syrian National Army with drones and airstrikes, leading to fierce fighting that killed at least 218 people on both sides.

General Mazloum Kobani, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, strongly criticized the U.S. passive response during the Battle of Manbij, saying the U.S. is abandoning its ally, the Kurds.

Taking advantage of the political turmoil, he warned that the extremist terrorist group Islamic State (IS) could re-emerge.

The Syrian Democratic Forces, a key partner in the fight against ISIS, have managed 20 facilities and refugee camps that have held more than 9,000 IS members in Syria.

However, as the Syrian Democratic Forces have turned their forces to the front, there are growing concerns over the escape of prisoners and the re-collection of ISIS.

The U.S. is trying to maintain a balance between Kurdish rebels and Turkiye.

U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby acknowledged Turkiye's right to defend against terrorism but said he would continue working with Syrian Democratic Forces in the fight against ISIS.

The Manbij region is now under U.S.-mediated ceasefire, and the Syrian Democratic Forces have decided to withdraw their troops from it.

However, the situation is still unstable due to the possible re-emergence of ISIS and clashes between rebels in Syria.
