Facebook parent Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also opposed ChatGPT developer OpenAI's push to transform itself into a for-profit corporation, following Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Zuckerberg recently sent a letter to California's attorney general asking him to block OpenAI's transition to a for-profit corporation.

"OpenAI has raised billions of dollars using its nonprofit status," Zuckerberg said in the letter, noting that it is now looking to shift its status to a for-profit corporation and use the investments it has attracted for private gain.

"If OpenAI is converted into a for-profit corporation, it will have a tremendous negative impact on Silicon Valley and set a bad precedent for many startups," he said.

It added, "Non-profit corporate investors will be able to benefit from taxes while also benefiting like for-profit corporate investors."

This reflects concerns that open AI with ChatGPT will become a threatening competitor in the AI market if it is converted into a for-profit corporation amid heated competition in AI technology.

OpenAI is pursuing a for-profit corporation transformation and is in initial discussions with the California government to do so.

Earlier, Musk also filed a lawsuit seeking to stop OpenAI's for-profit transformation into a for-profit corporation, alleging that Altman violated its contract with investors and others by reneging on its promise to run OpenAI as a non-profit organization.

In June last year, Musk and Zuckerberg, who were bitter rivals to the extent that they even heralded a fight between them online, have formed a joint opposition to OpenAI's move to transform into a for-profit corporation.

OpenAI refuted Musk's claim on the 13th, saying, "Musk proposed the transformation of OpenAI into a for-profit corporation in 2017 and actually created a for-profit corporation."
