Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kristia Freeland resigned after clashing with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the high-rate tariff response announced by the next U.S. administration, AP and other foreign media reported.

"Prime Minister Trudeau offered another position on the 13th, and he concluded that resigning from the cabinet was an honest and viable path," Freeland said in a resignation letter released on the 16th local time.

"Canada is facing serious challenges," Freeland said in his resignation letter, noting that the next U.S. administration is pursuing aggressive protectionist policies, including the threat of imposing 25% tariffs.

Foreign media believe Freeland has stuck to his opposition in the current situation and eventually resigned as minister amid disagreements with Trudeau over increased fiscal spending.

Trudeau immediately appointed a close public safety minister, Dominique LeBlanc, to replace Freeland.
