A bill that defines artificial intelligence digital textbooks promoted by the government as "educational materials" rather than "subject books" has passed the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee.

The Judiciary Committee held a plenary session and voted to revise the Elementary and Secondary Education Act with this content amid opposition from lawmakers of the People's Power.

Unlike 'curricular books' that all schools are obligated to adopt, 'educational materials', which are reference materials, may not be used at the discretion of the principal.

Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Lee Ju-ho, who attended the meeting, said, "Under the bill, there could be confusion in the educational field, and the more children in difficult areas, the more likely they are to be deprived of educational opportunities through new technologies."
