The British government has designated 20 more so-called "shadow ships" that export Russian crude oil as sanctions targets.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said today (17th) that Russian President Putin's oil revenues are being funded by illegal wars.

Starmer said Russia's continuing missile strikes were keeping Ukrainians up with cold, dark nights without electricity or heating every day.

He added that the sanctions would put further economic pressure on Putin.

Russia has been exporting crude oil on "shadow vessels" disguised as shipments from other countries after Western economic sanctions blocked export routes since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, prompting Britain and the European Union to recently tighten sanctions on those fleets.
