Suspension bridges, also known as 'Shake Bridge', became popular and increased throughout the country.
Korean researchers have developed a technology to easily diagnose the safety of suspension legs using electromagnetic sensors.
Reporter Lim Null-sol covered it.

A suspension bridge that is fun to shake with the feeling of floating in the air when crossing the bridge.
As each local government has more unique suspension bridges, many tourists are visiting.
The government has established and managed guidelines for design of suspension bridges and safety management manuals, but most of them use the method of checking with the eyes or tapping the structure to listen to the sound.
However, domestic researchers have developed a technology to accurately diagnose the safety of suspension legs using electromagnetic sensors.
By wrapping a sensor that creates a magnetic field around a cable to check changes in the internal magnetic field, it looks for hidden damage or cracks that are not visible on the outside like MRI.
When the coil-wound electromagnet creates induced electromotive force, the electromagnetic sensor that recognizes it recognizes the void inside the cable and diagnoses it as corrosion.
The lower the induced electromotive force value, the more severe the cross-sectional damage is, and it accurately measures the cable replacement standard of 5%.
[Park Kwang-yeon / Senior Researcher at the Korea Institute of Construction Technology: (This technology) has the advantage of being able to check what's inside without even looking at the cable. It is light enough to be carried around by a person and is easily detachable, so you can work quickly.]
In order to thoroughly inspect the suspension bridge, the inspection process was complicated and took more than three hours because the cable had to be wrapped in a long line.
On the other hand, if the developed equipment is easily filled like a bracelet on a cable and moves like scanning, it can be monitored to check the corrosion condition immediately in about two minutes.
[Choi Ji-young / Senior Researcher of the Korea Institute of Construction Technology : The (existing) method of testing is called precision testing, but it is not often done because it is expensive and time-consuming. However, using electromagnetic sensors, we can use it as we have a medical checkup every year.]
The suspension bridge has become a distinctive tourist resource.
The research team plans to create a framework for safety inspection of suspension bridges and apply it empirically by increasing the reliability and accuracy of the sensor through additional research.
