In France, a man who secretly drugged his wife and called men home to sexually assault her was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The first trial court in Avignon, southern France, found 72-year-old Dominique Pelico guilty of drugging his wife, 72-year-old Giselle, and forcing dozens of people to sexually assault her at a sentencing hearing on the 19th local time.

Forty-nine men who responded to Pelico's crime were sentenced to three to 15 years in prison for sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, and sexual harassment.

Felico was accused of putting sedatives into Gisele's glasses between July 2011 and October 2020 to make her unconscious and then calling men recruited via internet chat to rape her wife.

Gisele has called for a public trial, saying shame should be the responsibility of the perpetrators, and has been supported and cheered by many around the world as he faces the perpetrators in court.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was grateful for "great dignity," while German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also said Gisele had a strong voice for women around the world and that shame was always the responsibility of the perpetrator.

Gisele said in a statement after the sentencing that the trial was a grueling ordeal but said he hoped the whole society would be a witness and had never regretted the decision.
