At least 22 people were killed when a bus and a lorry collided on a highway in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais on the 21st local time.

The bus was leaving the capital Sao Paulo for Teofiluotoni with 45 passengers on its way to the capital, Sao Paulo, when it lost its balance due to a tire puncture and stumbled, before colliding with an oncoming large cargo truck and being engulfed in fire, the investigation found.

Fire officials say they have recovered 22 bodies from the bus, and the casualty toll is expected to rise further as rescue efforts are currently underway.

"We are mobilizing all of the state's available resources to help victims," Gov. Homeu Jema Minas-Gerais told X. "We will do our best to support the families of victims who have suffered the tragedy ahead of the blast."
