Pakistani broadcaster 24NewsHD recently said its air force has approved the purchase of 40 J-35 stealth jets.
They are expected to be delivered within two years to replace the U.S.-made F-16 and French Mirage fighter jets currently in operation, he added.
Hong Kong media outlet South China Morning Post (SCMP) said the sale is the first overseas alliance export of China's fifth-generation fighter jets and is expected to readjust relations with Pakistan's rival India.
Pakistan is a key country in China's Belt and Road Initiative, and has a common denominator of "checking India."
The Indian Air Force, which operates French Rafale and Russian Sukhoi-30MKI, is ranked sixth in the world, but does not have stealth fighters.
