The Texas Department of Public Safety says a truck driver chased by police at a large shopping mall in the southern city of Killeen broke a glass door at the mall's entrance on the evening of the 21st local time.
The Associated Press reported that the driver was shot and killed on the spot by police, and five people, including a 6-year-old child, were seriously injured in the shopping mall.
Local police said they tried to restrain the pickup truck after receiving a report of suspected drunk driving at around 5 p.m. that day, but the truck driver, who was fleeing the chase for about 30 kilometers, rushed toward the front door of the crowded shopping mall ahead of Christmas.
He then said he died at the scene after exchanging shots with local police and shopping mall security personnel as the truck driver continued to try and resist driving.
Local police are investigating the specific identity of the dead suspect and how he escaped.
