At least nine people were killed when a small aircraft crashed in a tourist city in southern Brazil.

According to local media in Brazil, a small aircraft fell on a residential area of Gramadou in the southern state of Hiugrangidusul on the morning of the 22nd local time.

Brazilian authorities say they understand that all nine passengers have died so far.

Governor Edouard Leitch wrote on social media, "It seems that all the passengers did not survive," adding, "The military and police were mobilized to the scene to deal with the unfortunate accident."

There were a number of buildings near the crash site, including accommodation and furniture stores, and the crash caused a fire in the property.

Local media G1 reported, "Those who were in accommodation facilities are being treated at nearby hospitals for injuries such as smoke inhalation."

The aircraft crashed minutes after taking off from nearby Canella airport, authorities confirmed.

Gramadou is a resort city well known for its European-style trails created by immigrants and their descendants in the past, and is one of the areas where tourists flock around Christmas.
