According to foreign media, the U.S. Central Command, which is in charge of the Middle East, Egypt and West Asia, said on the 22nd local time that a U.S. Navy F-18 fighter jet was shot down over the Red Sea with an "Army Misfire."
The Central Command explained that the fighter was shot down shortly after taking off from the aircraft carrier Harry Truman to carry out the operation by mistake in launching the guided missile cruiser Gettysburg, a member of the carrier's fleet.
The two pilots on the downed fighter jet managed to escape and were rescued safely, but one reportedly suffered minor injuries during the escape.
Central Command did not specify what weapon the Gettysburg used to shoot down the F/A-18.
According to USNI News, a military media outlet run by the U.S. Naval Research Institute, the Gettysburg has more than 100 vertical launch tubes for anti-aircraft missiles.
"As the carriers are connected to each other by radar and communication, it is not yet clear why the Gettysburg mistaken the F-18 for an enemy or missile," the Associated Press said.
