Brazil's National Transportation and Infrastructure Agency said on the 22nd local time that the central part of the 533-meter-long bridge connecting the city of Estreito in Mar-a-Nyang with the city of Aguiu-Aropolis in Tocantins collapsed later in the day.
Authorities said two trucks, a car and a motorcycle that were passing the bridge crashed down the river and sulfuric acid, which was being carried by a tanker truck, leaked into the Tocantins River.
Fire officials confirmed one death, and added that another was rescued.
Opened in 1960, the bridge is part of the BR-226 highway, connecting Brazil's capital Brasilia with the northern city of Belem.
The river is more than 50 meters deep, Reuters said.
