On the New York Mercantile Exchange, West Texas Intermediate for February delivery closed at $69.24 a barrel, down $0.22 and 0.32% from the previous session.
Brent crude oil for February delivery, which is subject to international market comparisons, closed at $72.63 a barrel, down $0.31 and 0.43% from the previous session.
The dollar index, which reflects the dollar's value against the six major currencies, crossed the 108-point mark again and rose to around 108.3 at one point.
Crude oil is denominated in dollars, so a rise in the value of the dollar could weaken demand for it among buyers using other currencies.
