Statistics Korea said the number of franchise industry workers stood at 1,012,000 as of the end of last year, up 7.4% from a year earlier, and the number of franchisees stood at 30,000, up 5.2% from a year earlier.
The franchise industry's overall sales also rose 8.4% to 108.8 trillion won, surpassing swan won for the second consecutive year.
Statistics Korea said the service industry continued to expand due to the end of the COVID-19 crisis, and the franchise industry continued to grow as the number of single-person households increased their tendency to eat out or find ready-to-eat meals.
In terms of sales, except for a 7% drop in stationery stores, the increase was in most industries, with bars such as draft beer up 24.7% and Korean food up 20.9%.The number of
franchises increased in most industries, including 13.6% for foreign food and 11.6% for stationery stores, except for a 2.3% drop in auto repairs.
Convenience stores and non-alcoholic beverages such as Korean food and coffee were the areas with the largest proportion of the number of employees and franchisees in the entire franchise industry.
