Russia's foreign ministry said the cargo ship "Ursa Major" sank in the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Algeria in North Africa, with two of the 16 people on board missing.
The 14 rescued were transported to Spain.
The ship, which departed the Russian port of St Petersburg on the 11th with a crane and an icebreaker, was scheduled to arrive in Vladivostok on the 22nd of next month, Spanish media said.
