Mozambique's Presidential Election Results Resumes Protests..."At least 21 people died".

Al Jazeera and other media reported at least 21 people were killed as police launched a hardline crackdown amid renewed protests against ruling party candidate Daniel Shafu after his victory in Mozambique's presidential election was confirmed.

"Violence and looting were sparked by protests by young people supporting the opposition candidate," Interior Minister Pascoal Honda said on the 24th local time. "21 people, including two police officers, were killed during the crackdown."

He added, "78 people have been arrested so far for damaging police stations, gas stations and banks, and security measures have been strengthened across the country."

Earlier on the 23rd, the Mozambican Constitutional Commission announced that Shafu, the candidate of the ruling party Frelimo, was elected with 65% of the vote in the presidential election held on October 9.

Opposition parties and supporters opposed to the long-serving Frelimo protested, and more than 130 people were killed after two months of unrest before the latest cyclone hit and the protests were suspended.
