Tesla CEO Elon Musk is seeking to build his own city in the U.S. state of Texas, the "conservative stronghold," the New York Times reported.

Employees of SpaceX headquarters, a Musk-owned space company located in the Boca Chica region on the southern tip of Texas, recently filed a petition with signatures to form a new municipality, according to the New York Times.

The main content is to establish a small city of the same name here, where the SpaceX-only space base "Starbase" is located, and to elect a mayor through elections.

The size of the city is 1.5 square miles (about 3.9 square kilometers) and the residents are around 500, including about 100 children, and most adults are known to be SpaceX employees.

A petition filed this month in the Cameron County court, which has jurisdiction over the area, also said SpaceX's security officer, Gunar Milburn, would run for mayor.

It's not clear what the real benefits of building his own "corporate city" are, but Musk has already expressed his desire to make Starbase a "Starbase city" for years, the New York Times explained.

It didn't lead to a specific move at the time, as it required more than a certain number of residents to create a city, but over the next few years, many SpaceX employees have rented temporary housing and moved around Starbase, which seems to have met the requirements for city construction.

The New York Times noted that if all legal requirements are met, the court must approve elections for the creation of a new municipality.

Cameron County Court Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. said he was in the process of reviewing the law and said a mayoral election could be held next year unless there were other issues.

"Musk himself is expected to be a voter if the election is held," the New York Times said, adding that he did not sign the petition, but said he had a residence in Cameron County and voted there last November.

It also reported that Musk could try to build an enterprise city outside of Starbase, and that he is already considering developing a suburb of Bastrop near Austin, Texas, to house employees.

The area will include a SpaceX manufacturing plant and the headquarters of tunnel-building company Boring Company, and social media company X (formerly Twitter) offices will soon be built, the New York Times added.
