As soon as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump publicly announced his intention to purchase Greenland, Denmark immediately responded, saying that Denmark had significantly increased its defense spending on Greenland.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Rune Poulsen announced a package to expand Greenland's defense spending on the 24th local time, the BBC reported.

However, it only mentioned "10 billion kroner units," without revealing the exact amount.

The BBC estimates that local media expect to reach at least $1.5 billion (about 2.188 trillion won), saying that the size of the package is between 12 billion and 15 billion kroner.

"We haven't had enough investment in the Arctic region in the last few years, but we are now planning to strengthen the presence forces," Paulsen said.

The announcement came a day after Trump said on social media that "for national security and freedom around the world, the United States believes Greenland's ownership and domination are absolutely necessary."

However, Denmark seems to be wary of an expanded interpretation, saying that the timing of the long-awaited policy announcement coincidentally overlaps.

Greenland, the largest island in the world, is a self-governing territory that entrusts Denmark with defense and foreign policy.

Given that natural resources such as rare earths are abundant and geopolitically valuable, Trump's comments, which had already expressed his intention to buy Greenland during his first term, cannot be dismissed as a simple joke, according to an analysis.

However, local experts noted that Trump's comments could have the effect of pressuring the Danish government's "self-reliance efforts."

Referring to Greenland's dependence on the Danish budget, the army major of the Danish Military Academy, Stan Kiergaard, told the BBC: "Trump is clever. "By speaking out without taking on a welfare system that is not at all American, it has made Denmark prioritize the military power of the Arctic Ocean," he said.
