According to data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), there were 30 commercial aircraft accidents last year.
That's one case per 1.26 million aircraft operations, the lowest since statistics were compiled.
In 2022, a year ago, the probability of an accident was about one out of 770,000.
According to a paper published in the Journal of Air Transport Management in August by Professor Arnold Barnett of Statistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the probability of deaths in aircraft accidents around the world between 2018 and 2022 was about one in 13.7 million.
Aviation experts consistently explain that both the probability of accident and death are lower than the risk of exposure in daily life.
CNN reported that even if the frequency of accidents is low, one accident will cause massive casualties, leaving considerable trauma not only to victims and their families but also to society as a whole.
More than 200 people were killed in the Jeju Air disaster and the Azerbaijani plane crash in just a week, already far exceeding the total number of aircraft deaths (72) last year.
"We show that aircraft are still the safest mode of transportation, but safety should not be taken for granted," IATA Director General Willie Walsh said earlier in the release of aircraft accident statistics for 2023.
