Humidifier disinfectant to Jeju Air..."Boycott in Love" Shares Plummet

The Jeju Air plane disaster has led to a boycott of its parent company, Aekyung Group.

Recently, in many online communities, including X, the article "Boycott the brand of Aekyung Group, the owner of Jeju Air", along with the brand list of Aekyung Group affiliates is rapidly spreading.

In particular, AK shopping malls, which are close to consumers, as well as Aekyung Industries, a distributor of household goods and cosmetics such as "2080", "Ricue", and "Trio", are in a direct condition.

Some consumers who insist on boycotting are also referring to the recent humidifier disinfectant incident in which the Supreme Court's second trial conviction was "disposed back." Ahn Yong-chan, former CEO of Aekyung Industrial Co., was indicted in 2019 on charges of manufacturing and selling humidifier disinfectant products using toxic chemicals from 2002 to 2011, causing 98 casualties, including 12 deaths.

Aekyung Group promised in an apology under the name of Chairman Jang Young-shin on the evening of the 29th, "We will do our best to spare all support at the group level so that the accident can be quickly resolved and necessary measures can be taken," but the controversy is expected to prolong.

This situation led to a sharp drop in stock prices. Shares of AK Holdings, which holds a 50.3 percent stake in Jeju Air, slipped 12.12 percent, while related stocks such as its affiliate Aekyung Industrial Co. fell 4.76 percent and Aekyung Chemical Co. fell 3.80 percent.

Aekyung Group established Jeju Air in 2005 through a public-private partnership with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.
