When the Senior Civil Servant Corruption Investigations Unit filed an arrest warrant with the Seoul Western District Court, not the Seoul Central District Court, President Yoon Suk Yeol protested that it was illegal.

Experts, however, say it is difficult to take particular issue with the request to the Western District Court, considering the jurisdiction of the presidential residence.

Reporter Kim Chul-hee reports.

On the 30th of last month, the Senior Civil Servant Corruption Investigations Unit chose the Seoul Western District Court rather than the Seoul Central District Court, requesting a warrant for the arrest of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Since the Senior Civil Servant Corruption Investigations Unit has been requesting most of the warrants to the Seoul Central District Court, where the first trial will be held, it has been evaluated as an unusual choice.

In response, the Senior Civil Servant Corruption Investigations Unit only considered the location of the presidential residence and explained that there were no major problems under the current law, but
President Yoon
continued to protest, saying, "We selected a warrant judge preferred by the Airborne Administration and requested a warrant."

[Yoon Gap-geun / Yoon Suk Yeol Presidential Counsel (Yesterday): A warrant, which should be filed in the Central District Court, has been filed in the Western District Court as if it were some kind of "warrant shopping." When I look at the procedure, it must be an illegal invalid warrant.]

However, there are many reactions in the legal community that it is difficult to accept President Yoon's argument as it is.

Any warrant that does not meet the requirements will be rejected by any court, but there is no reason to choose a court.

In addition, the Western District Court is in charge of Yongsan-gu, where the Hannam-dong residence and the presidential office are located, so it is not an unusual decision.

[Son Young-hyun / Lawyer] Of course, you have to file a claim with the Western District Court. It is difficult to interpret that the Central District Court does the cases prosecuted by the Senior Civil Servant Corruption Investigations Unit, and that everything else should be sent to the Central District Court.]

Officials at the Central District Court also said similar cases have occurred before, and there is no need to request a warrant from the same court every time.

However, there is a possibility that the situation will change depending on the results of the power dispute trial raised by President Yoon and the application for an injunction to suspend the validity of the arrest warrant.
