At least 32 people were killed in the new year as Israeli airstrikes continued in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

"The world is celebrating the New Year, but the suffering of Palestinians is getting worse," said Mahmoud Basal, a spokesman for Gaza's civil defence force.Palestinian officials say

Jabaliya, northern Gaza, and Bureise refugee camps have been bombed, with many of the dead being women and children.

The Israeli military said rockets were fired near Bureiz and that it had removed Hamas militants.

Israel's defense minister, Israel Katz, warned that Hamas would be hit by an unprecedented scale of airstrikes if it did not release the remaining hostages and stop the attacks.
