Former Representative Liz Cheney, a leading anti-Trump figure in the U.S. Republican Party, was awarded the Presidential Citizen Medal by President Joe Biden.

President Biden held his last medal ceremony at the White House on the afternoon of the 2nd local time and hung the medals on the necks of 20 people, including former Congressman Cheney.

Benny Thompson, a Democrat who served as chairman of the January 6 Capitol riot special committee along with Cheney, was also included in the list of instructors.

The Presidential Civil Medal for the general public is the second highest medal awarded by the President of the United States after the Medal of Freedom.

The January 6 special committee issued a final report stating that Trump, who lost the 2020 presidential election, was criminally involved in a plot to overturn the legitimate election results and did not prevent supporters from attacking the Capitol.

Cheney, then vice chairman of the special committee, concluded the hearing in July 2022, criticizing former President Trump for using his supporters' patriotism to turn their love into a weapon to attack the Capitol and the Constitution.
