The National Weather Service (NWS) under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said on the 2nd local time that the polar vortex, a very cold air flow surrounding the Arctic, will expand and cause severe cold waves in the central and eastern United States.

The NWS made this forecast when updating its mid-term weather forecast for the 10-16th period of this month.

According to the forecast, the cold wave will start in the Northern Plains region east of the Rockies (Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota) and affect much of the U.S., including the Midwest, South and East.

The southeastern United States, including Florida, is expected to experience some of the most severe cold and cold winds this winter, with many areas falling below zero in the southernmost Florida Peninsula, the NWS warned.

The lowest temperature on the 7th night could drop to minus 25 degrees Celsius in Minnesota, and could reach minus 8 degrees Celsius in Texas and minus 4 degrees Celsius in Georgia in the South.

Where cold air meets moisture, snow and heavy snow are possible.

Snow is especially expected from the Great Lakes region to the central and eastern United States, and snow is likely to fall in the south, including Florida and Texas.

This cold wave is expected to last for the next two to three weeks or more.

Citing the NWS forecast, the BBC reported that the average expected snowfall in places with snow during this period is around 5cm.

The BBC said, "The northern part of the United States is used to heavy snow in the cold winter, but cold winds from the Arctic in Canada can bring freezing temperatures ranging from minus 34 degrees to minus 29 degrees Celsius. Even if the skin is exposed to this air for only 30 minutes, it can cause frostbite, he said, urging caution.

U.S. political media Axios said more than 30 out of 50 U.S. states will be affected by the end of the cold wave, and more than 150 million of the U.S. population of 345 million will be affected.

He also predicted that many people will pay a lot for heating because natural gas prices have risen, and that some areas may have to conduct a "circular blackout" during the cold season due to lack of power supply.

Axios explained that the expansion of the Arctic vortex in the winter from late 2013 to early 2014 caused cold waves to hit southern Canada, the United States and Europe all at once.
