Simon Tisdahl, a columnist for the Guardian's international affairs, said in a commentary that changes are expected on the Korean Peninsula, which has been dormant for more than 70 years, and pointed out that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has endured decades of sanctions and built a strong missile and nuclear warhead arsenal.
At the same time, he diagnosed that with the launch of the Trump administration, North Korea's nuclear weapons program is likely to develop in a more provocative direction, and that military pressure and negotiations during the first Trump period could be dangerous at this point.
He then predicted that the argument that South Korea should have its own nuclear weapons could be more convincing given Trump's tendency not to engage in foreign disputes.
Tisdahl said Trump has threatened to shut down U.S. military bases in South Korea in the past, citing Trump's attitude toward the alliance and his opaque North Korea policy as factors that will influence South Korea's own nuclear weapons theory.
He also warned that future negotiations between Trump and Kim Jong-un are likely to dismantle the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and allow North Korea to possess some nuclear warheads, and that if such a scenario is realized, other countries, including Japan, will continue to attempt to arm itself beyond South Korea.
