The Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea fired a medium-range ballistic missile into the East Sea from Pyongyang around 12 p.m. today.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff explained that the missile flew about 1,100 kilometers and landed on the East Sea.
He added that South Korea and the U.S. intelligence authorities have been monitoring North Korea's missile launch preparations in advance and have closely shared relevant information with the U.S. and Japan.
He emphasized that North Korea's missile launch is a clear provocation that seriously threatens peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
Analysts say that North Korea's provocations against South Korea and the U.S. may have resumed in the future as the North launched provocations two weeks before Trump's inauguration as president, which is scheduled for the 20th.
