Altman made the remarks in a Bloomberg interview when asked why he donated to Trump, who opposed many of the things he supported.
When asked about the criteria to say "we've now achieved AGI," Altman explained, "The most approximate way is when AI systems can do what a very skilled person can do in a very important task."
Then there are follow-up questions such as 'whole job or some job?', 'can you do what the best people in your field can do?' and 'how autonomous?' but added that if you could hire AI as a remote worker as a good software engineer, many would rate it as "yes, that's like AGI."
Regarding the donation, Altman said, "I don't think it's a big decision either way. But I think we should all hope for the president's success."
When asked what the second Trump administration can do for AI, he avoided direct answers and said, "What I deeply agree with the president is how difficult it has become to build power plants, data centers, and those kinds of things," adding, "I understand how bureaucracy has accumulated, but it does not help the country as a whole." It doesn't help, especially when you think about what needs to happen for the United States to lead AI," he stressed.
