According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) website, a new word update in December last year included "noraebang," "maknae," "jigae," "tteokbokki," and "pansori" in the dictionary.
It has been more than three years since 26 words, including "K-drama," "hallyu," "mukbang," and "debak," were included in the Oxford English Dictionary in September 2021.
The Oxford English Dictionary was first published in 1884 and is considered one of the most authoritative in the English language. It now operates as a searchable online platform and is updated regularly every three months.
The Korean-related words included this time have cultural meanings such as Korean food and titles, and there are many things related to the Korean Wave culture, which has been very popular in the English language.
'Dalgona' is a Korean candy snack made with melted sugar and baking soda and is usually sold in a flat plate with simple shapes such as hearts and stars carved at street vendors.
An example excerpt from the Boston Globe in October 2022 was also presented, "Netflix has just introduced the Korean hit 'Squid Game', which attracted fans with Dalgona candy."
'Tteokbokki' is a Korean dish consisting of a small cylindrical rice cake cooked with a spicy sauce made with red pepper paste, usually served as a snack.
The Oxford English Dictionary shows how much the "K-culture" actually spread around the world, as English-speaking people choose and publish frequently used English words.
