Seven words from Korean culture, including "dalgona" and "hyung," were posted in the English dictionary published by Oxford University Press.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) website on the 7th, the new word update in December last year included " noraebang," "maknae," "jigae," "tteokbokki," and "pansori" in the dictionary.

It is the first time in more than three years that words from Korean have been listed in the Oxford English Dictionary since September 2021 when 26 words, including K-drama, Korean Wave, Mukbang, and daebak, were included.

The Korean-related words included this time have cultural meanings such as Korean food and titles, and there are many related to "K-culture," which has been very popular in the English language.

'Dalgona' is a Korean candy cake made with melted sugar and baking soda, and is usually sold in a flat plate with simple shapes such as hearts and stars carved at street vendors.

An example excerpt from the Boston Globe in October 2022 was also presented, "Netflix has just introduced the Korean hit 'Squid Game', which attracted fans with Dalgona candy."

As the Oxford English Dictionary picks out frequently used English words by English speakers, it reveals how much K-culture has actually spread around the world.

In the future, the number of Korean-related words in the Oxford English Dictionary is expected to increase steadily.

Next year, I'm considering posting 'Haenyeo', 'Ajumma', and 'Bingsu'.
