Philip Goldberg, the U.S. ambassador to Korea, returned to the U.S. after his term in office.
The U.S. government is expected to send Joseph Yun, a Korean-American former special representative for North Korea policy, as acting U.S. ambassador to South Korea.
Considering the unstable domestic situation, it seems that they are trying to fill the position of ambassador temporarily, but Korean-American figures are also mentioned in the next ambassador.

Philip Goldberg, the U.S. ambassador to South Korea, who expressed his resignation in time for the Trump administration, has returned home after two and a half years of living in South Korea.
Ambassador Goldberg said, "Korea is a great country," as if conscious of the current domestic situation, and that he will overcome difficulties.
[Philip Goldberg/U.S. Ambassador to Korea] I know very well that Korea is in a very difficult situation. However, I also know that Koreans will overcome difficulties well.
The vacant post of U.S. ambassador to Korea is expected to be appointed as an ambassador until a new ambassador is officially appointed.
Ambassador Goldberg said that Joseph Yoon, a Korean-American special representative for North Korea policy, will come as the acting U.S. ambassador to South Korea.
[Philip Goldberg/U.S. Ambassador to South Korea: (Is it true that Joseph Yun is coming as acting ambassador to South Korea?) Joseph Yun will be appointed as acting ambassador to South Korea in a few days.]
It is an unusual decision compared to the fact that the embassy's deputy was acting as an ambassador until a successor was appointed.
Analysts say the decision is aimed at giving weight to the embassy in consideration of the recent unstable domestic situation such as martial law and impeachment.
This is because the next U.S. ambassador to Korea can take more than a year to take office after the new U.S. administration exercises its personnel rights and is approved by the Senate.
Previously, the U.S. ambassador to South Korea was vacant for 16 months before ambassador Goldberg took office, and immediately before that, Ambassador Harry Harris took office after an 18-month hiatus.
Former U.S. Congressman Michelle Park, who is also Korean, and former deputy national security adviser Alison Hooker are mentioned as the next U.S. ambassador to Korea.
In particular, former Representative Michelle Park is known to be recommended by current and former Republican leaders, including current House Speaker Mike Johnson and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
