Trump "doesn't promise to exclude the use of force in Greenland, Panama Canal"

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who will take office in two weeks, has said he will not rule out the possibility of using military force in relation to the Panama Canal and Greenland territorial issues.

Asked at a news conference at his mansion, Mar-a-Lago, Florida, if he would rule out economic or military coercion to secure control of the Panama Canal and Greenland, Trump said he could not affirm the two issues.

He also stressed that the Panama Canal and Greenland will not commit to excluding the use of coercive measures, saying they are important in the economic and national security of the United States.

It said it would impose very high tariffs if Denmark interfered with it, especially if Greenlanders voted to become independent or incorporate into the United States.

Regarding the Panama Canal, he said it was in violation of the agreement by charging excessive tolls only to the United States, and explained that he was discussing it with Panama.

Trump said he could use economic coercion, not military force, against Canada, which recently discussed the possibility of incorporation into the United States.

At the same time, NATO members insisted that 5% of their gross domestic product should be spent on defense.
