In a two-day runoff from yesterday to today, candidate Kim Taek-woo won 60.38 percent of the vote, beating candidate Joo Su-ho, who won 39.62 percent.
Kim led the struggle against the government by serving as the chairman of the emergency committee of the Medical Association in the early days of last year's parliamentary conflict.
He was suspended for three months for his involvement in the collective action of his major, and he is said to have gained support from his major in this election.
Chairman Kim previously insisted that all medical policies promoted by the government should be temporarily suspended as the president is in a vacancy.
Chairman Kim will lead the medical association until April 30, 2027, the remaining term of former chairman Lim Hyun-taek, who was impeached amid controversy over his rude talk.
