Korean airlines such as Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, and T'way Air began regular operations of domestic SAF-fuelled aircraft on international flights once a week in accordance with the strategy to spread "SAF refueling commercial operations" announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on August 30 last year.
SAF is an eco-friendly fuel that can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional aviation oil because it is based on biomass derived from animals and plants and carbon collected in the atmosphere.
Domestic airlines also use SAF from domestic refineries certified by international civil aviation organizations such as SK Energy, GS Caltex, and S-Oil.
With the mandatory SAF mixing on international flights in 2027, the number of domestic airlines participating in the use of SAF is expected to increase.
