The Taiwanese authorities, which allowed same-sex marriage for the first time in Asia, have approved gender-transforming surgery for minors this time, sparking controversy for and against it.

According to Taiwanese media on the 13th local time, Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare recently approved minors aged 12 to 18 to undergo gender reassignment surgery after evaluation by a professional team if they have difficulty adjusting to their gender.

In response, Taiwan's LGBTQ group welcomed the Taiwanese government, saying it has taken a big step forward, but opposition is also growing, especially in the medical community and parent groups.

In particular, parent organizations also demanded answers about how doctors and other professional teams will be responsible if adolescents who underwent sex reassignment surgery regret it after they become adults.

Earlier in May 2019, Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage for the first time in Asia with the introduction of a special law on same-sex marriage.
