The KOSPI closed 1.04 percent lower at 2,489.56 as strong U.S. employment data reduced expectations for a U.S. rate cut.
The KOSDAQ index also closed 1.35% lower at 708.21 amid net selling by foreigners and institutions.
On the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate rose 5.8 won to 1,470.8 won as of 3:30 p.m. on the back of rising U.S. Treasury yields.
