According to China's state-run CCTV, a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce criticized the Biden administration's AI-related export control measures the day before (13th) as "installing obstacles to normal trade practices between China and third parties and interfering recklessly."
"The Biden administration's deafening to the industry's reasonable voices and hastily announcing measures is an example of expanding the concept of national security and abusing export controls," he said. "China strongly opposes this as a clear violation of international multilateral trade rules."
He also stressed that the move not only has a serious impact on global scientific and technological innovation, but also causes enormous damage to companies around the world, including American companies.
"We will take the necessary steps to firmly defend our country's legitimate rights and interests," a Commerce Department spokesperson added.
Earlier, a week before his term in office, the Biden administration announced new export controls that would sell semiconductors needed to develop AI to allies such as South Korea without restrictions and set limits for the majority of the rest of the country.
The U.S. big tech industry also publicly protested the move, fearing slowing business growth and regulatory costs, as the U.S., which controlled AI semiconductors' exports to China, is interpreted as a measure to block bypass routes using third countries.
