Last year, global temperatures rose by 1.6 degrees Celsius from the pre-industrial era, and a British climate activist group was arrested for demonstrating by spraying paint on biologist Charles Darwin's grave.

Two activists from Just Stop Oil in England wrote '1.5 degrees dead' in orange paint on Darwin's grave at Westminster Abbey in London.

1.5 degrees is the target for curbing global warming as set out in the Paris Agreement.

"If we know that humans are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction, Darwin will lament in his grave," activists said, calling for an end to the use of fossil fuels.

They were arrested at the scene on charges of property damage.

Westminster Abbey immediately removed the paint and said there was no permanent damage left.
