Woori Bank's former vice president, who was arrested and charged with engaging in illegal loans by former Woori Financial Group Chairman Sohn Tae-seung, has requested that he be tried without detention.

At the bail hearing held at the Seoul Southern District Court, 61-year-old Sung, former vice president of Woori Bank, emphasized the need to guarantee his right to defend himself, saying that he only worked as he believed to benefit his job and did not have the opportunity to explain the bank's credit process to his lawyer.

On the other hand, the prosecution refuted that Sung's release could contaminate testimony with accomplices, saying that the unfair loan was carried out on top-down orders and that Sung was promoted in return for his involvement in the process.

Earlier, Sung was put on trial in November last year under arrest on charges of approving a total of 15.4 billion won in illegal loans on four occasions between September 2022 and May 2023.
