The lack of response to the risk of a bird collision, which is the first cause of the Jeju Air plane disaster, has come under fire in the National Assembly's pending questions.

Critics also criticized the localizer concrete hillside, which is blamed for the disaster's damage.

This is reporter Choi Doo-hee.

A plenary session of the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee, where the first pending questions were asked about the Jeju Air plane disaster.

Lawmakers in the ruling party pointed out the geographical problems at Muan International Airport, which is surrounded by bird habitats.

[Kim Jeong-jae / National People's Power: We have increased the area of the Muan tidal flat wetland reserve by about 2.7 times. It is called a paradise for endangered migratory birds. Let's ask the fundamental question whether it is right to create an international airport in such a place.]

Concerns were also added that many of the airports currently under construction are migratory birds, and some pointed out that practical measures were largely lacking despite the possibility of a bird collision.

[Yoon Jong-gun / Democratic Party member: As the number of bird collisions is also increasing due to the increase in operations, it is written that natural efforts to prevent collisions are needed. What measures have you come up with as a countermeasure against this?]

[Park Sang-woo / Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport: For example, there are many migratory birds in the southern part of Muan Airport, so even though more facilities and manpower had to be deployed, it was probably not possible because it was mainly focused on the number of flights.]

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it would reinforce preventive personnel and equipment in response to the criticism that Korea's bird eradication method is very backward.

There was also a series of sharp questions about the localizer blunt force that was blamed for the disaster.

[Seo Bum-soo / National People's Power: It costs a lot to flatten the airport overall, so there may be suspicions that this was taken out of the manual due to cost issues]

[Lee So-young / Minjoo Party member: It seems clear that the indifference and complacency of everyone from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Regional Aviation Administration, and the Korea Airports Corporation made this case during the decades of design, construction and operation of this airport.]

Regarding the reason for using hard concrete material, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport replied that it seems to be doing it to make it less affected by the wind.

[Park Sang-woo / Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport: A plane is not supposed to come to the local riser, but that's a facility that sends a signal to set the angle of the plane, but Muan is trying to make it less affected by the wind because it's strong....]

Asked if the control tower communication records could be released in connection with the disappearance of the last four-minute record from the black box of the plane, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it would consider whether to disclose them.
