U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has pledged to impose 10% to 20% universal tariffs on all imports if he takes office, said he would set up a separate government agency to collect tariffs from foreign companies.

"We will create an external import office that will collect tariffs, import taxes and all imports from foreign sources," Trump said on social media.

"We're going to charge those who are making money in trade with the United States and they're finally going to start paying their fair share," it said.

"The U.S. economy has taxed itself through a pitifully weak trade deal, brought growth and prosperity to the world, but it's time to change that," he stressed.

Earlier, former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, Trump's former bookmaker, proposed to Trump that he set up a foreign import office under the Treasury Department to review new sources of imports, including tariffs and fees for foreign investment.
