Former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama announced on the 14th local time that she will not attend President Donald Trump's inauguration next week.

According to CNN and other reports, former President Barack Obama and his wife said in a statement that former President Obama will attend Trump's inauguration on the 20th, but former first lady Michelle Obama will not.

It is a long tradition in American politics for former presidents and their wives to attend a new presidential inauguration, but Michelle Obama announced her absence from Trump's inauguration without explanation.

Michelle Obama also stayed in Hawaii last week without attending the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter at the National Cathedral in Washington.

On the other hand, former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton will appear at Trump's inauguration.

Trump's inauguration in 2017 was attended by all current former presidents and first ladies, including Hillary Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump.

Michelle Obama invited the Trumps to the White House for a traditional transition ahead of her inauguration in 2017, but has since shown strong hostility to Trump.

In his podcast in 2023, Michelle Obama also criticized Trump's first presidential inauguration, saying, "We had to sit on the podium and watch what we represented," adding, "There was no diversity, no color, and nothing that revealed a greater meaning of the United States."
