The Japanese government said it is "watching a series of moves in South Korea with great interest" in President Yoon Suk Yeol's arrest on charges of rebellion and other charges.

Japanese government spokesman Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi responded to a related question at a regular press conference in the morning, saying he would refrain from commenting on the internal affairs of other countries.

"Korea is an important neighbor to cooperate as a partner in responding to various challenges in the international community," he said. "The importance of Korea-Japan relations in the current strategic environment remains unchanged."

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya visited South Korea and confirmed the importance of close cooperation between South Korea and Japan through foreign ministers' meetings, adding that he would communicate closely with the South Korean government.
