The government has decided to strengthen the competitiveness of the affordable phone pricing plan by cutting telecommunication company infrastructure fees by the largest margin in 10 years.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced today (15th) that SK Telecom, a wholesale service provider, will lower the wholesale price of data by up to 52% from 1.29 won to 0.62 won per megabyte.

As a result, it is expected that the pricing plan of 5G affordable phones that use 20 gigabytes of data per month will be reduced to the 10,000 won range as early as the first half of this year.

The government has also decided to expand the discounts it receives when purchasing data for affordable phone companies in advance from carriers in large quantities.

In addition, we will gradually lower the basic line usage fee for small and medium-sized affordable phone companies to lower the burden of affordable phone rates.

Ryu Je-myung, head of the network policy office at the Ministry of Science and ICT, explained that one of the important policy goals is to foster affordable phone companies with their own facilities and systems to meet the conditions to challenge the fourth mobile carrier.
