On the 15th local time, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced export control regulations requiring government authorization for exporting certain equipment used in biotechnology laboratories.
There are two types: a flow cytometer used to determine the characteristics of individual cells and particles, and a liquid chromatography mass spectrometer used in protein genetic informatics.
The Commerce Department explained that these equipment could be used for research and development that poses a threat to U.S. national security.
By training artificial intelligence (AI) with a large amount of biological information obtained through equipment, it can be used for military purposes such as improving physical capabilities, interfaces connecting brains and machines, synthetic materials, and biological weapons.
The Commerce Department says biological information can be used for a wide range of private and commercial uses, but certain countries are abusing these technologies to achieve asymmetric military superiority.
This export control applies immediately, and if you export to Korea and other countries belonging to the export control country group A:1, you do not need to obtain permission.
Export is not permitted by default to countries in groups D:1 and D:5, such as China and Russia.
"We have strategically constructed export controls to focus controls on countries of concern, preserving the ability of the international community to responsibly use these experimental equipment to advance biotechnology's very beneficial uses," said Alan Estevez, deputy minister of industrial security.
