The real owner of Bithumb, who was handed over to trial for leaking more than 30,000 customer information, was not punished after about five years of appeals due to the lack of provisions in the law.

The Seoul Eastern District Court has ruled against Junghoon Lee, the former chairman of the board of directors of Bithumb Holdings, who was accused of violating the Information and Communication Network Act.

Attention means that if the provisions of the law are abolished or the statute of limitations has expired and the indictment is inappropriate, the lawsuit is concluded without making a final conclusion.

The court explained that the punishment clause applied to Lee was deleted due to the revision of the Information and Communication Network Act in 2020, and that the possibility of criminal punishment against Lee disappeared.

Earlier in 2017, Lee was sentenced to a fine of 30 million won in the first trial for failing to fulfill his obligation to protect personal information, such as storing customer information on a personal PC without encryption and not installing a antivirus program.
