U.S. Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio said Tuesday that China could invade Taiwan in the next five years.

"Without dramatic changes like they (China) conclude that the cost of (military) intervention in Taiwan is too high, we will have to deal with this (China's invasion of Taiwan) before the end of this decade (January 2020-December 2029)," Rubio told a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing in the Washington, DC Congress.

"The cost of invading Taiwan outweighs the benefits," Rubio said of the so-called "hedgehog strategy," adding: "We want to make China abandon the idea by believing that it can ultimately win the invasion of Taiwan but that the cost is too great to bear."

In response, China protested.

"The United States must establish the right awareness of China and stop attacking and tarnishing China for no reason," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jacun said at a regular briefing.

Regarding Rubio's mention of China's possible invasion of Taiwan, he responded to the U.S. by saying, "The biggest challenge to peace in the Taiwan Strait is Taiwan's independence and division activities and the destruction and destruction of external forces."
