Former professor Shin Jung-ah was investigated by the prosecution on allegations related to the resignation of former head of the Blue House Byeon Yang-kyun, who served as the chief policy officer of the Blue House, in 2007 due to the Shin Jung-ah scandal.
The case, which had a big impact in Korea, was investigated by President Yoon, who was active in the related investigation team when he was a prosecutor at the Central Prosecutor's Office at the time.
Prosecutors are said to have asked former professor Shin about the forgery of his doctoral degree at Yale University, whether he asked former head of the department Byun Yang-kyun for various sponsorship from the government and businesses, and whether he was an accomplice in the escape process.
In his autobiographical essay '4001' published in 2011, former professor Shin confessed in detail about the incident at the time.
Prosecutor Yoon blushed and shouted, sarcastically, and pointed his finger when the answer he wanted was not found, former professor Shin wrote. "If Byun Yang-kyun was uncooperative like this, he said he would rot in a cell for the rest of his life, and I was so scared that I peed sitting in a chair."
"At the time, Prosecutor Yoon rushed to kill me, took headache pills and let go of his mind," he said. "When the warrant, which I thought would be issued for sure, was rejected, Prosecutor Yoon said, "I will put it in next time, so don't like it too much."
"Through the prosecution's investigation, I could understand why the murder was caused by anger and shame, and why suicide was committed," he said. "It was difficult to even attempt suicide because he was in custody." He also recalled that he hoped that the death sentence would be rather sentenced to death by shame and pain.
Suspicions of the prosecution's investigation team's coercive investigation into former professor Shin were also a problem at President Yoon's confirmation hearing for the prosecutor general in 2019.
In response, President Yoon dismissed the allegations, saying, "There was no coercive investigation during Shin Jeong-ah's investigation," adding, "Like other investigations, we followed due process according to laws and principles."
