U.S. President Joe Biden pardoned five people, including Marcus Garvey (1887-1940), a civil rights activist who died in 1940, and commuted his sentence to two on the 19th local time, the last day of his de facto term.

According to a White House statement, Biden's pardon includes Gavi, who was pardoned after death, Don Scott, Virginia's first Black House speaker, Kemba Pradia, a criminal justice advocate, and Darryl Chambers, a gun violence prevention activist.

President Biden has actively exercised his pardon power in the final half of his term since the presidential election in November last year.

On the 1st of last month, he pardoned his second son Hunter Biden, who was convicted of illegal gun possession, and on the 12th of the same month, he pardoned 39 nonviolent criminals and implemented a reduction of 1,500.

On the 23rd of last month, ahead of Christmas, 37 out of 40 inmates on death row were commuted to "life imprisonment without parole," and on the 17th, about 2,500 nonviolent drug offenders were pardoned.
