Iran's Supreme Court sentenced Amir Hossein Magsudlu, 37, a singer accused of desecrating the Islamic prophet Muhammad, to death in response to the prosecution's demand for a five-year prison sentence, saying it was light.
Magsudlu is an underground singer who has been working under the stage name 'Amir Tatalu'. It has gained popularity for its music combining
Rhythm and Blues (R&B), rap, and pop music, and has drawn attention for its colorful tattoos on the face and whole body, bold lyrics about Iranian politics, and great influence on Iran's younger generation.
In 2015, he also released a song advocating Iran's nuclear weapons program.
He has been living in Istanbul, Turkey, since 2018 before being returned to Iran by Turkish police in 2023 and has been detained.
Tatalu was charged with propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran, publishing pornography and advocating prostitution.
The death sentence by Iran's Supreme Court is not a final ruling and could be appealed by Tatalu, the Guardian said.
